When I write a song, I usually follow a few simple steps.
1. Inspiration
For this, I often find inspiration anywhere. From a little frog sitting at the edge of the pond, or the fireflies in the summer air, or even a bowl of cereal.
2. SOME lyrics
Then, I take that inspiration to write a line or two of the chorus. This just helps me figure out what the song is going about as a whole.
3. The Tune
Coming up with a rhythm is one of the hardest parts of the song writing process, sometimes the best thing is to just move your feet, and take it from there. Once your feet have a beat, it's easier to bring that beat to the instruments and your voice.
4. The Rest Of the Lyrics
Next, you begin to write down the rest of the lyrics. Take those few lyrics you have already, and interpret them so that the fit into the tune. Then, build the basis of your song around that idea
5. Editing
This is also a very important part of this process. If you edit, you can make sure your song lyrics make sense, that your music isn't complete plagiarism, and that it is overall something that expresses you as a person.
Sincerely,
Everything Eli
P.S: Top Tip: That your song lyrics and words match up. Often you'll find that a lyric is not the right length for the music, and ultimately you have to make the decision to change one of them.
